We are always interested in acquiring exceptional works by Australian and New Zealand artists painting in France and North Africa between 1880 and 1940.

Artists including Frances Hodgkins, Iso Rae, Hilda Rix-Nicholas and Ethel Carrick Fox. In particular I have always had a fascination and liking of Ethel’s works.

In a rough chronological order here are a few examples of the works acquired and traded over the years.

The first image is that painted on panel in 1907 of Saint Mark’s Venice I was particularly drawn to this work for the fact that Emanuel Phillips Fox is depicted in the foreground on the right painting a companion scene of Saint Mark’s a very personal picture.

An impressionist painting of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice with people in front of it and red poles in the scene.

Ethel Carrick Fox “St. Mark's” Venice 1907

During the years from 1908 to 1911 Ethel and her husband spent a lot of their time painting Plein-air on the Normandy and Brittany coastline painting scenes on the beaches including that of St Malo, Dinard, Trouville and Deauville.

The picture on the right depicts the fantail at St Malo at high tide.

St Malo Fantail 1910

A recurring theme throughout her life was her delight in depicting the flower markets especially around France, once again the earlier works were generaly smaller and painted on panel and in the 1920’s she painted larger works on canvas.

A black and white vintage photograph of a busy outdoor marketplace with numerous people shopping for flowers and goods. There are market stalls with umbrellas, large trees providing shade, and some buildings in the background with signs in French.

Le Marché Aux fleurs Cours Saleya Nice

Even though this was painted circa 1937, Ethel has retained the vibrancy and crisp use of colour she belonged to the theosophical society and visited India regularly, occasionally living on a house boat in Kashmir.

Historical black and white photo of a riverside scene with small boats, people, and early 20th-century buildings, including a church steeple in the background.
